Ohio State Men's Gymnastics Scholarships in Trouble

Will Other Universities Follow Suit?

October 4, 2024

As first reported by NCB4 News, sources say that Ohio State University will be cutting scholarships for men's gymnastics, though the timeline for such cuts are unclear. Outrage from the community has already started to pour in noting that men's gymnastics is already limited to such a small number of scholarships – 6.2 to be exact. The cost of maintaining these scholarships is miniscule compared to Ohio State's Athletic Department Revenue as reported in the 2023 Equity in Athletics Disclosre Act (EADA).

While Ohio State may not have current plans to cut their program, this decision will put all fifteen NCAA programs on edge. Men's Gymnastics has been in a state of steady decline for years. An exception came two years ago when Greenville University and Simpson University added men's gymnastics program. Now with athletic directors heavily considering their bottom line thanks to Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), many fear that this will be the end of Olympic sports like men's gymnastics in the NCAA.
