The DTB Pokal Team Challenge is taking place March 27 - March 30. There are team and individual competitions for Junior and Senior Men and Junior and Senior Women, as well as the unique Mixed Cup. On March 28, junior athletes from around the globe competed in the team competition–a competition that also served to qualify to Sunday's Final.
Placing first on Floor, Pommel Horse, and Vault and second on the remaining apparatuses, China handily took home the gold medal in the team competition with a 234.100. The USA earned the silver with a 231.250 and Great Britain earned the bronze with a 229.050.
Rounding out the top five were Australia and Kazakhstan respectively. These results are particularly exciting as we look toward the next quad. These two federations have seen recent success from individual senior men, but were unable to field full teams at the 2024 Olympics. Success in international competition from juniors could indicate big things to come in the future for the senior program as these young athletes age up.
To that end, Kazakhstan’s Nurtan Idrissov also took home the silver in the all-around and qualified to four event finals. Australia’s Caedan McIlhatton finished the all-around in fourth place and qualified in first to the parallel bar finals.
International competitions like DTB with relatively deep fields even in the junior division offer a great opportunity to highlight young athletes from federations that are not traditional powerhouses, like Kazakhstan and Australia.
Individual All-Around
As for the individual all-around medalists, Yang Lanbin (CHN) won the gold with a 78.900. As previously mentioned, Nurtan Idrissov (KAZ) won silver with a 77.800. And finally, Wang Chengcheng (CHN) won bronze with a 77.600.
Yang Lanbin’s individual performance would have placed him in seventh if he had competed in the senior division. Yang is an upcoming star for China coming off of a 2024 national championship win in the under 17 division in China.
Event Final Qualifiers
Event finals at the DTB Cup were structured differently than other major competitions. A maximum of six athletes qualified to each event final, with a maximum of one athlete per country. NOTE: These finalists are subject to change due to country substitutions, withdrawls, or injury.
