The All-Around final was an exciting race, with just seven-tenths separating the top four gymnasts. But clean gymnastics and consistency among all six events helped carry Oka to his gold medal.
Though the meet was as adrenaline-filled as any men’s All-Around Final, Perhaps the biggest shock was reigning World and Olympic All-Around champion Hashimoto Daiki’s absence from the podium. Hashimoto had a fall on pommel horse in the second rotation, but still managed to place sixth with an 84.598. It is no small feat to score that well counting a fall. His score would’ve won a bronze at the 2023 Worlds.
Outside of the well-decorated veterans, the All-Around Final highlighted some very exciting newcomers and young gymnasts.
Of the top 8 finishers, gold medal winner Oka Shinnosuke was the newest to the international senior elite scene and was the second youngest in the final altogether. Oka made his international senior elite debut at the Asian Championships in Singapore last year. Oka now holds the record as the youngest-ever Olympic All-Around Champion, a record previously held by Hashimoto.
The youngest gymnast in the final–Switzerland’s Matteo Guibellini (19)–rounded out the top-ten finishers. Notably, his 10th place finish is Switzerland’s best at an Olympics since 1952.
And though he’s a senior elite veteran with previous Olympic experience, two world all-around titles, and numerous European championship titles, Ukraine’s Illia Kovtun, who missed the podium by two-tenths, is just two months older than Oka.
In a sport where age is often considered a boon, it’s compelling to see young competitors defy expectations and go head-to-head with veterans.
The final competition took place at Bercy Arena in Paris, France, along the river Seine. The men’s gymnastics competition will resume on August 3rd with the floor and pommel horse finals, where several of the gymnasts in the all-around will be competing once again. And as a reminder, the reigning Olympic champions on floor, pommel horse, vault, rings, vault, and parallel bars all still have their shot at defending their titles in Paris.
